What you can do to support your teen's emotional health
Regardless of whether you and your teen are getting along well or having challenges, it is important to demonstrate your love and support for them, and your ability to guide them through difficult situations. Here are some things to keep in mind when you feel like your teen’s emotional health is not at its best and want to have a conversation with them.
Let them know it is okay to express their emotions
As a parent, look for ways to check in with your child. Find out about how their day is going or ask them to help you with a chore like making dinner so you can use the time to get some one-on-one time. Remind them that you are there for them, no matter what. A few simple words of encouragement can help them feel comfortable sharing their feelings. It is crucial to acknowledge and understand the emotions they might be experiencing, even if it feels uncomfortable.
Make time to help and support them
With adolescence comes independence and while needing space is a normal part of growing up, make sure to take the time to support your child when they need it. If your child feels frustrated, work with them to brainstorm some solutions to their problems. Additionally, find ways you can support and encourage your child to take breaks from their school-related tasks to do the things they enjoy.
Resolve disagreements together
Anyone can find themselves in a stressful situation when dealing with a conflict. Take the time to talk about conflicts that arise after you have given them thorough thought. Being open and honest with your child will allow you to let them know that you also may be experiencing extra stress. They can feel more comfortable with their emotions when you demonstrate how you handle your own difficult feelings.
Practising self-care
As parents, you are faced with many challenges and just like your child, you also need care and support. Feeling overwhelmed is okay and you should not hesitate to ask for help from others. Make time in your day to do the things that help you cope with and manage stress. Your own well-being is equally as important and by practising what you preach, you can instil the importance of self-care in your child.
