What course choices are there at secondary schools in Berlin?
The qualification phase is made up of the final two upper secondary level years. Most of the grades collected in these two years are included in the final Abitur grade. That is why students need to think very carefully about which subjects they choose as examination subjects.

Minimum number of courses
At a “Gymnasium”, a total of 40 courses must be attended. This includes:
- 28 basic courses spread over 4 semester.
- 8 advanced course subjects spread over 4 semesters.
- 4 physical education courses spread over 4 semesters.
Choice of courses
All subjects, except physical education, are divided into one of three field of studies:
- Linguistic-literary-artistic field of activity (I)
- Social sciences field of activity (II)
- Mathematical-scientific-technical field of activity (III)
