Preparing your child for secondary school
Starting secondary school brings a change to your child’s everyday life. They meet new peers and teachers. There is new study material and homework, and overall a new environment. It is perfectly normal for children to have mixed feelings in this case. Today we talk about what you should do as parents to help ease the transition to secondary school education.
Before the school year starts
Visit the school together
Many schools organise open days, especially during the decision-making phase for a secondary school. Attending this type of event gives you and your child a chance to take a tour of the school, meet the principal and teachers, and learn what your child can expect at the school. Sometimes your child will even meet future classmates there, which will further ease the transition.
Discuss transport options
When you visit the school together, it is advisable to discuss transport options to and from the school. In addition, you can practise taking the route together, to build your child’s confidence about travelling independently.
Throughout the school year
Practise good study habits
Practising good study habits before the start of secondary school and all throughout will strengthen your child's learning skills and prepare them for more challenging schoolwork. It also makes sense to encourage more self-directed learning. Allow your child to take responsibility for setting aside time for homework and keeping track of deadlines. Start with daily check-ins to make sure they are on track before moving to weekly check-ins.
Listen to your child
It is important to actively listen when your child shares their feelings and concerns. Talk with them about what they are most looking forward to and what they are worried about. Reassure your child that worries are natural but can also be resolved. Do not also forget to have a conversation about keeping in touch with old friends and making new friends. You could also share your own secondary school experience to make your child feel at ease.
